One of the most prestigious universities in America, Stanford University, is located in Santa Clara County. The university sets the foundation of a census-designated place of the same name, Stanford. The official population is around 14,000 people, a number that triples daily as the university campus fills with students and faculty driving in from neighboring areas. Stanford University was founded by Jane and Leland Stanford, whose son died of typhoid fever. While most university-owned land is in the CDP of Stanford, a few locations are actually part of Palo Alto. This includes Stanford Research Park, Stanford University Medical Center and Stanford Shopping Center. With a main focus on the school itself, Stanford has limited other attractions.
