Santa Clara County is home to Stanford University, one of the most prestigious universities in America. The university anchors a census-designated place of the same name, Stanford. The official population is around 14,000 people, a number that triples daily as the university campus fills with students and faculty driving in from neighboring areas. Jane and Leland Stanford, who lost their son to typhoid fever, founded the university. Most of the university's land is in the Stanford CDP, but a few places, including Stanford Research Park, Stanford University Medical Center and Stanford Shopping Center, are actually part of Palo Alto. Life here centers on the school, so there's not much else to see, but there is the Dish, a 150-foot radio telescope built by the Stanford Research Institute, and Stanford Golf Course, a good place to unwind from rigorous classes.
